I hope you all fill the long daylight hours today (summer Solstace) with lots of fun things. I’m looking forward to the new moon Sunday, too. Wow. Summer can really rock.
As I age, however, I like the extreme weather less and less. No wonder so many people live on the coasts where the ocean cools things off. At least, that was my impression when I was there last. It’s been almost twenty years, however, so my memory may be faulty. But I do have some fond memories of summers in Kansas.
What happened to those lazy days of summer? Remember when we were kids and school was out. We slept in and stayed up late. Went to the pool. Ate Popsicles and chased the ice cream truck. We captured lightning bugs and rode our bikes for miles around the neighborhood. We stayed outside until dark or mom yelled to come in. We had sleep overs and ball games in the backyard. We went to the drive-in theater and ate hotdogs and cokes. We played in the sprinkler and threw water balloons at each other to stay cool.
We didn’t mind the heat as much because we were always moving. And when it did get too hot we went into the basement and listened to records or played cards (War or Crazy 8’s) for hours. Dad grilled burgers at least once a week, and sometimes twice. We froze cups of Kool-Aid and made our own huge popsicles. And there was so much juicy fruit to eat, especially strawberries, watermelon and peaches that were grown right here. And homemade ice cream was terrific. We only made it in the summer, taking turns cranking until we got an electric maker.
What are your favorite memories of summer?
